Total Daily Hours (20/05): 13.30hrs

Total Hours: 122.20hrs

We went into this week very excited about our route, the hiking trip being just the three of us (Kailee, Libby & I), and getting to use all of the fun tools and gear that we had spent last week gathering. Monday was pretty tame, Libby was still with her family so Kailee and I worked to distribute all of the group gear and started packing our personal packs. This included little things like our toothbrushes, contact lenses & counting out medication, and maybe a book or some cards. We set aside Libby’s things for her and ended the day fully prepared.

Tuesday was a bit messier. Of course our morning was chaotic, but the day ended peacefully with our first vlog at our first campsite. The main thing that we struggled with on Tuesday was that we were underprepared when Rosanna came to pick us up, and as a result we struggled with leaving on time, bad cellular connection, and car sickness. We messed up the address for the trailhead slightly, resulting in us being dropped off at the AT & highway 25A junction about 20 minutes (by car) North of our anticipated drop off. Upon reflection, I’m happy that the first day of our hike was a little clumsy, because our ability as a group to accept what happened, adapt and move on brought me confidence in our ability to handle other potential problems as the week went on.

This confidence bleed through into Wednesday morning when we noticed it started snowing as we were hiking out of our campsite. Our plan having already been altered also made me feel better about changing direction to go East instead of North-East following the AT. Between interacting with people at the Lodge, discussing our best course of action as things continued to develop and continuing to adapt and deviate from our original route, I felt confident in our ability to problem solve and got that confidence from our ability to work together.

Things weren’t perfect the entire time; it was a little clumsy as we navigated our first hiking trip without an established leader. There were minor things like our morning routines, the water filtration system, cooking dinner (well), etc… all had minor issues that didn’t run smoothly until the third day or so when we finally started finding systems and setting camp up/ taking it down in a way that worked for all of us, and all of us felt comfortable with.
